Selling stock short is a simple way to make money when stocks drop. To "sell short" simply borrow the stock from your broker, sell and then buy it back when prices fall. Then go back to the broker you borrowed from and maintain the benefit. Yes, it is perfectly legal!
Imagine that. A conservative investor with high heels, and Mr. O'Neil advocate for investors to learn to sell short. Surprisingly, only has to look back to when Bill began his investment career to see why he is willing to take this "odd" position.
In the sixties, O'Neil was a young stockbroker in New York, the main Stock Exchange member firm. Based on his research, decided to close all their positions in the stock market in spring 1962. Then he began short selling. Later that year he had obtained a significant benefit, while almost everyone was crushed in one of the worst bear markets of the time. A year later, he bought a seat on the Stock New York and started his own company.
After more than four decades studying the markets, Bill believes that there are two main reasons that most of investors can not sell. " The first is the obvious lack of knowledge on the subject. Most people have not even heard of the short sale. The second reason is the psychological resistance most investors against short selling. After all, investors are not supposed to make money when stocks go down ... Right?
Beyond educational programming, mental emotional and needed to get his head on the fly, much of our work as active investors is to find the dominant market trend and profit from it - even when it is below.
Normal investors may scoff at the idea of sell short, but highly successful investors and traders are not normal values. While accepting the fact that the stock market goes in the direction it pleases, the latest generation of market players, knows how to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the downside of market cycles repetitive.
